In a family portrait session, the poses that each member will carry out are usually directed by the photographer. So, a portrait photographer like you must be able to think of poses that are ideal for each family member and can make the family portraits look incredible.Even london wedding photographers plan poses for wedding portrait shots.

You can find basic poses online which you can modify to suit your needs or style. To help you get started, here are some posing tips that might help you plan the poses for a family photography session.

Head Alignment

When composing your shot, you need to consider the alignment of the heads of your subjects. Consider each family member’s height. Guide the couple and their kids to find their height and position them in the most ideal spot if you want a formal shot. You can let the couple stand behind their little children. But if the little kids cannot remain still and get bored, you can have them seated with the parents. All members must look equally stunning.

Photograph early and quickly

Kids easily get bored because they generally have a short attention span. A good solution is to start as soon as all members are ready.  Kids are more cooperative during the first hour of the session. You can do formal portrait shots in the first hour then some candid in the remaining hours.

Babies must be fed before the photo session and the parents can keep them in deep sleep by playing with them before the session so they are tired and will most likely sleep during the shoot.

Everybody can be seen

As a portrait photographer, you need to ensure that everyone in the family is visible. No one should be covered by another member. It doesn’t mean though that the full body should be seen, at least the upper body and face are visible and the image doesn’t look awkward and unbalanced. Check if everyone can be seen on camera before you click.

Light plays a big part in photography so ensure that no unwanted shadows are caste on a subject especially when shooting outdoors. Change your angles or switch positions of members or change the settings of your camera so everything is clear and sharp.

Most families consider their family portrait sessions as a bonding time for them. Make sure they are having fun doing the shoot. Avoid being too strict with the poses. Let your creativity work so the family portraits will look real, awesome and overall memorable for the family.

Things to Discuss with Parents before an Infant Photo Shoot

infant photographyAn infant photo shoot is always a fun and exciting experience for the parents. They are excited to see how their cute little ones will look in the pictures. These pictures are expected to display the innocence and charm of the baby. And since these moments (particularly newborn days) happen only once in a lifetime, it will be a regret to see such moment pass without being captured on camera.

Infant photo shoot requires time, patience, determination and good will between the parents and photographer for it to become successful. You cannot take great infant photos if your client – the parents – won’t cooperate. As a professional photographer, you need to plan, be prepared and discuss important matters to the baby’s parents before the scheduled session.

There are things you need to discuss with the parents so that everything will be set in place before the pictorial.

  1. Comfort

The infant’s comfort is of utmost importance. There are several ways to make the baby feel relaxed and comfortable. Heating up the room, feeding the baby ahead are two of the best ways to make them comfortable. It is best to advise parents to heat up the room if the pictorial will be done in their house. They should also ensure that the baby is full so it will be in deep sleep throughout the session.

  1. Safety measures

You need to inform the parent’s ahead on what poses you are planning for the baby to make. Assure them that their baby is in safe hand and that you have an assistant who will always keep an eye on the baby in case it rolls over. The parents can also assist if they want to. Photographers of calgary newborn photography always make sure there is an assistant at least a foot away from the infant.

  1. Props

Discuss also the props that should be used for the shoot. Are they going to bring some props or would they like you to lend them some? The props must clean, freshly washed and free from pointed objects. Professional photographers like wedding photographer andover are very meticulous with the things they use in photo shoots.

  1. Time

The best time for the photo shoot is during the baby’s sleeping time. Baby’s sleeping hours are unpredictable but you can apply ways to make them sleep in your chosen time. You can tell the parents to play with the infant a few hours before schedule until several minutes before schedule.

  1. Clothes

Talk also about what the baby should wear – 3 to 4 clothes would be enough. Furthermore, advise them to dress their baby in loose clothing either button-up o zip-up before the shot. It will be easier to remove clothes and move the baby without waking it up if the clothes have buttons or zipper.

  1. Specific Shots

Present to the client your plans for the shoot so they will know what to expect and how to help prepare for it. You can tell them your planned poses and discuss the importance of having them (parents) to be in some pictures with the baby. This photo session is special and this can be made more special with the parents or siblings presence in the pictures.

By discussing important matters related to the infant photo session, the pictorial will flow smoothly and successfully.
