Before the Shoot

  1. Discuss all details with the parents

Give suggestion to parents as to how they can help make the photo shoot successful – feed the baby before the shoot, change the diapers and have a sibling or parents themselves join the shoot.

  1. Check your gear a day or two before the schedule.

Check camera and lenses to ensure all are functioning. Bring also a backup for each primary and secondary accessory so nothing will be missed during the shoot. Familiarize also the settings of your camera and choose the ideal shooting mode as well as the right lens to use.

  1. Study the location – studio or client’s home.

If it will be done in the client’s house, learn how sufficient the light is. Are there windows where natural light can come in? Or do you need to use an external flash and just diffuse the light? Is the ceiling too low or just right? Photographer Hampshire can explain to you how important light is in photography

  1. Make him asleep throughout the session

The body of a newborn in deep sleep is easier to control or manipulate so request from the parents to keep the baby awake a few hours before the session so the newborn will be asleep during the shoot.

During the Shoot

  1. Have someone stay near the baby to ensure he won’t fall or roll over.

Baby’s safety should always be your number one priority. If you have an assistant, have him/he stay at least a foot away. Never take your eyes off the baby

  1. Check the blankets or props before using.

See to it that there are no harmful or hidden objects that might hurt the baby. The stuff should all be sanitized and safe. Don’t forget to ask the parent about any allergies that the baby might have.

After the Shoot

  1. Get the baby dressed

Tell the parents to dress up their child right after the shoot so the baby won’t get sick or uncomfortable.

  1. Show the unedited pics to the parents.

You can show to the parents the pictures on your camera and have them choose what they want for printing or for the album. Those that they have chosen can be edited first using a photo editing tool before having them printed.

Using these guidelines, it will be quite easier for you to go up your way to becoming a successful professional newborn photographer.
