Those of you who are curious to get into newborn photography must be prepared and willing to do it. Yes it fun but it definitely requires skills and knowledge to master this field. You must also consider undergoing photography training as well as constantly shoot and learn from your mistakes.

Following tips from credible professional photographers who are into newborn or baby photography can be also be a good start for new shooters.  Below are several newborn photography tips that are helpful to amateur newborn photographers.

  1. Keep the room warm for the baby

Since some of the shots taken will require a baby to be naked and placed on a blanket, you will need to ensure that the room is warm enough to make the baby feel comfortable. If a baby feels cold, then he/she will surely wake up and get fussy. Thus, make sure to turn on the heater to the right temp so the newborn will stay asleep all throughout the session making it easier for you to do your job.

  1. Eliminate distracting objects

The background of the shoot can have a big impact to your image. If your background is full of clutter, then it can ruin the picture. It will distract the attention of the viewers thus the focus will no longer be on the baby. It is hence important to check the background before shooting and remove distracting objects especially if the shoot is in the client’s house.

  1. Check newborn props before using

The safety and well-being of the baby should be your utmost priority when shooting. It is a must to check thoroughly the blankets, props and other accessories before the newborn shoot. All items must be clean, sanitized and free from pointed or harmful object. Make sure also that you are clean so when you carry the baby you cannot transmit anything that can possible hurt or harm him. Handle the newborn client in the same manner you handle your own precious child.

  1. Suggest a morning schedule

Many newborn photographers and even parents can confirm that newborns normally sleep longer and more soundly in the morning. This means that a morning session is more ideal than an afternoon shoot. Suggest for the parents to have the pictorial in the morning so the baby will be easier to handle since he/she is most likely asleep. Remind the parents though that they should feed the baby before the shoot so the newborn will be in a good mood.

  1. Take macro shots

Parents love seeing picture of their newborn’s small hands, tiny feet and hands and chubby cheeks. A macro lens is a good way to capture these detailed macro shots so make sure to bring one for the newborn photo shoot. How to Take Perfect Snaps of Your Kids

photograph kidsPhotographing kids is not easy. Kids are usually restless and at times fussy. It takes a lot of patience, understanding and effort to get the perfect shot when your subject is a kid.

Even professional photographers of Kent Wedding Photography who take pictures of their own kids also sometimes find it difficult to take perfect snaps. But well, with experience, they are able to do it better than non-photographer parents. These professional photographers know how photographing a child can be made easy and successful.

We’ve talked to some of these child photographers and gathered tips on how to take perfect snaps of kids. Have a read below.

  1. Let them play and enjoy

Kids generally love to play and have fun. It is best to take them to a location that they will find fun and exciting. It can be in the park or inside their playroom. You can take candid shots of their happy and thrilled faces while at play.

  1. Shoot from a different high or low perspective

You can produce more creative shots by deviating from the normal “get on their level” view. Try to take the shot by getting low on the ground or by looking over your child’s shoulder. You can have him/her do whatever he/she wants while you’re snapping pictures.

  1. Let them wear comfortable but age-appropriate clothes

You need to allow the big kids to choose the clothes they want to wear during the photo shoot. It should be comfortable to wear and is appropriate for their age and the location. For babies and toddlers, you can choose the clothes that you think best reflect their personalities.  This can make a good milestone shot that is worth keeping for a lifetime.

  1. Choose the shooting mode that suits the age and environment

Little kids tend to be more active and quite intractable so it is good to choose burst mode shooting. For bigger kids who are mostly docile, you can choose aperture priority mode or portrait mode. You can have your child look directly into the camera and have their eyes as the focal point. You can show him/her the picture right after shot so he/she will be more engaged into the photo shoot. Showing your child the pictures will make him/ her attempt to look better or give his best smile for the next shot.

  1. Use zoom lens to avoid making your subject feel uneasy

For more natural-looking, candid shots, use a zoom lens so you can snap pictures of your kid from afar. Consider including the environment of your child while he’s doing an activity or when he’s at play. Don’t forget to take macro shots of his happy face while blowing bubbles, sliding down the slide, or eating his favorite snack.

  1. Take macro shots of your kid’s face

Give him an interesting object that can make him sit still or move less so you can take close up shots of him. Snap your camera close and capture the true beauty of your awesome kid.

  1. Be Extra PATIENT

Patience is VERY important when photographing kids because it usually takes time to capture the perfect snaps. Try to make the shoot as fun as possible. Don’t show your kids you are in a hurry to take shots but instead be cool about it. Strategize well and be discreet when taking candid shots.

Perfect snaps of your kids should reflect their real beauty and true personality. It is best to avoid retouching a lot during post production. Just let the true beauty be shown in the pictures. Check out this event photography website to get ideas on how the pictures should be like.

You can even set the shoot annually so you will have milestone shots of your beloved child which you can later show to him/her.
